Blindfold Walk Today with BC Guide Dog Services and Shaw
We are pleased to be supporting BC Guide Dog Services at the Vancouver Island Pet Expo on May 28th & 29th at Pearkes Arena.
Today the Vancouver Island Pet Expo and BC Guide Dog Services had an interview with Hilary Hallman from Shaw TV, one our sponsors of the expo. The focus of the interview was to see what it is like in the day of life with one of BC Guide Dog Services dogs.
Corrina, a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor showed us the basics of walking blind folded with one of their dogs Eddy. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to walk with Eddy blindfolded as well. I was blindfolded and then led by Eddy through the downtown core. It is amazing how my senses completely picked up in other areas. I was hearing more than I ever have before. I put all my trust in Eddy and let him guide me the whole way.
Eddy has been training with Corrina for months and is just about ready to be placed with his match. Matching one of the dogs is one of the most complex parts of the process. The Guide Dog Mobility Instructors analyze the dog's abilities and disposition to ensure they are a good match for each client in need. BC Guide Dog Services provides professionally-trained dogs at no charge to their clients. They raise all of the $37,000 needed to breed and train a Guide Dog all from donations. They don’t receive government funding for the work they do.
Tune in to Shaw TV local 11 in Greater Victoria to see Eddy in action at 6:00pm on Thursday May 12th.
Also make sure you come down and see the BC Guide Dog Services at the Vancouver Island Pet Expo on May 28th & 29th at Pearkes Arena and experience for yourself what its like to be led by a guide dog.
